The Florence Volunteer Fire Department, which has been proudly serving our community since 1964, provides fire protection and emergency medical care to the Town of Florence and the surrounding, unincorporated, areas of Rankin County. The Department has two fire stations which house three engines, two rescue vehicles, a tanker, and a brush truck. Our department, lead by Fire Chief Chip Taylor, currently has over 25 members. Many of our members have advanced firefighting training, hazardous materials expertise, vehicle extrication training, and other firefighting and rescue certifications. All of our firefighters are certified Emergency Medical First Responders and several are EMTs and Paramedics.

In 2009 the Florence Volunteer Fire Department responded to over 700 requests for assistance. Approximately 30 percent of those calls were structural, grass/woods, or vehicle fires while 70 percent were emergency medical calls and vehicle accidents.

The City of Florence supports the Florence Volunteer Fire Department through monetary donations and with a fire truck owned by the city.  These are some of the things that are being done by the city that will ensure the safety of our citizens and the continued growth of our community.

If you wish to make a contribution to the Florence Volunteer Fire Department or are interested in becoming a member please call (601) 845–2709. The departments mailing address is P.O. Box 242, Florence, MS 39073.

The Florence Fire Department’s main station is located on Dewees Street in Florence. It has a newly renovated activity room that is available to rent for birthdays, showers, classes, etc. Call the number above for more information.

Fire Marshall Edwin Sandifer has been in the professional fire service since 1979.  The fire marshall’s duties are responding to any emergency calls, fire prevention inspections, hydrant inspections and fire safety education.   The City of Florence has added new water wells, tanks and upgraded water lines to meet the needs of the fire service and to help with fire ratings.  Most recently added were the water well and tank on Williams Road which were constructed and began operating in 2009.
